EXPLORATION TIME: A wise preschool teacher once told me..."Play is a child's work." Boy was she right! This enriching, self-guided time the basis of our day. Children are encouraged to select a favorite activity or try something new; whether it be at our sensory station, our dramatic play area, or working with a friend on a new felt board or puzzle activity that has been laid out. We have block builders and race car drivers and dollie care takers moving about, learning in oodles of ways as they "work".
MORNING MEETING: This is the time of day when we gather together, greet one another in song and listen to each other. Here we practice many preschool and kindergarten school skills: calendar time, letter sounds and recognition, counting, story time, singing, dancing and so much more!
SHARE TIME: A favorite by all kids! Most Fridays, we have a share day in which kids can bring something from home. Most share days are dictated by the letter of the week, but here and there we make sure to sprinkle in a "free day" in which the kids can bring anything from home that is special to them.
STORY TIME: This is one of my favorite times of the day. Exposing children to literacy at a young age is crucial for their development and also helps foster a love of reading! Our stories typically reflect the theme we are focused on for the week. Kids are always welcome to bring a favorite book from home to share.
GROUP TIME: This is the time of day when we gather 'round the table and create something. We use lots of glue and paint and strive to focus on "the process" rather than the finished product. This is a great time to build up self-esteem - honoring the work they put into their creations!
LUNCH TIME: Never underestimate the learning opportunities when kids share a meal at a table. I love to expose the kids to new foods and strive to offer a variety of fresh produce whenever possible. Meal time is a great place to work on table manners and those tricky fork and spoon skills!
REST TIME: Kids' bodies are busy growing...at a fast pace. I firmly believe rest helps them do just that. All kids have their own pack-n-play or rest mats and are encouraged to bring a special blanket and cuddly item to rest with. Quiet time activities are offered to our non-nappers, while their younger friends sleep.
SNACK TIME: After a good snooze, our crew reunites at the snack table where we share a healthy snack...and on occasion some yummy treats to refuel our bodies before either going outside for pick-up time or choosing an indoor activity when necessary. We have adopted a fun and new tradition known as "Cookie Friday"! All bakers and tall glasses of milk are welcome...!
OUTSIDE TIME: We go outside and take in fresh air at least once a day. Families are asked to send along proper gear each season so we can make this possible. While outdoors, we do what kids were built to do...RUN! JUMP! ROLL! PLAY! EXPLORE! We view our outside play time as an extension of the classroom! We have a basketball court for riding toys & shooting hoops...a Rainbow Play System for swinging, climbing and fort management...and a perfectly inclined hill for sledding in the winter!
